Leys Orchestra Winter Concert with Harpist Helen Tang

  • 12 Jun 2016
  • 3:00 PM - 4:15 PM
  • Freeman's Bay Community Hall, 52 Hepburn Rd, Freemans Bay, Auckland

Come along to our concert featuring music by Elgar, Satie, Scharwenka and Fauré.

"Nursery Suite" is one of Elgar's last compositions, with picturesque titles like "The Sad Doll", "Busy-Ness", "The Wagon" and "The Merry Doll" taking inspiration from his childhood. As Master of the King's Musick, Elgar dedicated the suite to the baby Princess Margaret, her older sister Princess Elizabeth and their mother, the Duchess of York.

The major work in this programme is the symphonic tone poem "Frühlingswogen" by Philip Scharwenka, who had the conductor Otto Klemperer as a pupil. This moody work evokes the changeable moods, storminess, exhilaration and calm repose of nautical winds and waves.

The harp features prominently in our programme, and we are privileged to be joined by special guest artist Helen Tang. This beautiful instrument brings an added dimension to the sound of our orchestra.

The concert is rounded out with the wonderfully evocative "Gymnopédies" by Eric Satie and Fauré's "Pelléas et Mélisande" Suite, including the famous Pavane featuring harp and flutes.
